The mission of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic School is to educate the minds, bodies, and spirits of a culturally diverse community of lifelong learners who exemplify Catholic values.

Important Announcement from Superintendent Dr. Rigg

January 17, 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians of St. Michael School,

On behalf of the Archdiocese of Chicago, I regret to inform you of some difficult news. As you know, St. Michael School has faced declining enrollment in recent years. The declining enrollment has caused a strain on the school's finances. With less tuition revenue, the school is not able to cover its costs and has incurred an operating deficit. Despite best efforts to restore the school to viability, finances and enrollment have not improved. Neither the parish nor the Archdiocese are able to pay for the school's operating deficits that are driven by the low enrollment. As a result, St. Michael School (South Shore) will close at the end of this school year, effective June 30, 2018.

I recognize this news has a challenging impact on you and your family. We are very interested in making the transition cause by this closure as easy as possible. The Archdiocese will be reaching out to you regarding nearby Catholic schools. Realizing you have choices to make, I hope you will consider enrolling your child at another Catholic school in order to continue his or her learning experience in a faith-filled environment.

In order to assist you in this transition, we have prepared materials to help you in conversations with your children about these tough issues. We also put together a map of neighboring Catholic schools. Copies of these materials are available in your school office. We realize you may have questions. As such, we invite you to join us tomorrow, Thursday, January 18 at 6 p.m. at the school for a meeting where school and parish leadership, as well as Archdiocesan representatives, will be available to answer your questions and discuss next steps.

I commend the dedicated leaders, faculty and staff of St. Michael School for their tireless work to foster an academically rigorous and faith-filled community. St. Michael School has provided a strong education to generations of young men and women helping them develop intellectually, physically and spiritually.

Please know we remain committed to your children's Catholic education and will do everything we can to assist you in the days, weeks and months ahead.

I am praying for you, your family and the St. Michael School community.

Yours in Christ,

Jim Rigg, Ph. D.
Superintendent of Catholic Schools
Archdiocese of Chicago

Jim Rigg, Ph. D.
Superintendente de Escuelas Católicas
Arquidiócesis de Chicago
